Behind the Scenes: Safety at Sea

✨You know us for our breathtaking tours along the Nā Pali Coast: sea caves, dolphins, waterfalls, and golden hour sunsets.  But behind the scenes, there’s another side to Na Pali Experience that’s really the most important, safety.

Every quarter, our crew gets together and heads out on the water for safety drills.  It’s part boot camp, part lifeguard olympics, and 100% essential to ensuring our guests are safe, calm and cared for no matter what happens on the water.🌊

Why We Practice

We’re not just tour guides, we’re trained captains, first responders, and ocean safety pros.  The ocean is beautiful, but she’s got a wild side, and we take that seriously.  Practicing lifesaving techniques on a regular basis keeps our instincts sharp, our communication clear, and our teams in sync.

What We Practice

🛟Man Overboard Scenarios: Don’t worry, it’s just a drill!  One crew member takes a plunge into the blue, and the others spring into action.  You’ll see life rings soaring through the air and our Captain alerting everyone, “Man overboard, 10 o’clock!” as the boat circles back.  There’s a flurry of motion: engine cut, spotter pointing, and someone ready to hoist our “overboard” buddy back aboard, grinning and dripping.  (After a thumbs-up that all is well, we’re high-fiving like we just won a championship🏆👐)

🏊Distressed Swimmer Scenarios: The Nā Pali’s crystal clear waters are usually pure joy, but we even drill for scenarios like a snorkeler needing help.  Picture a crew member out in the water pretending to be in distress.  Immediately our team springs into action: one grabs the flotation device 🛟 and heads out to assist, another keeps an eye on them from the boat, and others prepare to help the person back on board.  It’s all timed and coordinated, so in a real situation, we’d have anyone back to safety in a jiffy.

🛥️Vessel Emergency Situations: Safety isn’t just about the water, we prepare for onboard hiccups too.  We rehearse how to quickly (and safely) shut down engines, use extinguishers in case of fire🔥 and move our passengers to safety.  How to throw anchor ⚓to stabilize the vessel, and how to safely evacuate our passengers if necessary.   These situations are extremely unlikely to happen, but if it did, our team is ready and you’re in the safest hands.🤝

🩺CPR and First Aid Skills: Safety isn’t only about big emergencies.  It can be as simple as a slip or a snorkel mishap.🤿  That’s why every crew member is certified in First Aid/CPR and we keep those skills sharp.  We take turns practicing first aid skills and CPR techniques to ensure that if anything happens in real life, from a small scrape to a bigger boo-boo, we can handle it smoothly while keeping our guests comfortable and reassured.

The Fun Side of Safety

Yes it’s serious, but that doesn’t always mean it’s boring.  With our team, there’s always a little friendly competition, a lot of jokes, and a few dance parties on the way home.  We believe training doesn’t have to be dry(no pun intended).  Practicing in the same waters we tour makes it feel real and makes us better at what we do.💪
